Welcome to Akula Elitnaurvik (Akula School), in Kasigluk, Alaska. We are located on the Johnson River about 25 miles due West of Bethel, Alaska, and about 60 miles inland from the Bering Sea. Our community values the traditional Yup'ik way of life (Yuuyaraq) which includes subsistence, Yup'ik dance, feasts, and community.
Our village has a grocery store, hardware store, post office, clinic, Traditional Center, and police station, all located on the Akula side. Some people live on the Akiuk side (the original village) and some people live on the Akula side. According to the 2020 census, our population is about 550 people.
Our PK-12 school of approximately 115 students is served by 23 staff members which include 12 native and non-native teachers. We focus on Dual Language instruction in kindergarten through 5th grade to ensure that the Yup'ik language is preserved.
Our school mascot is the tundra fox and we enjoy many after-school activities including cross country, basketball, NYO (Native Youth Olympics), and mixed-6 volleyball. Academic clubs include robotics/STEM, speech, science club and reading club.
Our focus is EVERY CHILD ~ EVERY DAY. We use this to remind us that the most important people we serve are in our classrooms. Through this approach we support the entire community.
Our motto is:
Strong Community, Strong Students, Strong School
