Weekly News From Akula Elitnaurvik 9/15/17:

Strong Community, Strong Students, Strong School

Pinilria Nunacuar, Pinilriit Elitnaurat, Pinilria Elitnaurvik

Many amazing things are happening in classrooms around Akula! Kindergarteners in DLE know their teachers Yup’ik name without prompting. First graders are getting more comfortable writing their numbers from 1-120.

Grade 6-10 students have been taking their reading inventory and their scores have been exciting! Students are seeing the connection between effort and achievement.

The fifth and sixth grade built a kindness cards bucket to go along with the Village Child Protection Team (CPT) team and Kendal Jackson’s work on bullying and it’s replacement action -- kindness. Each student wrote 8 generic kind sayings on a card and then we put them in a bucket. Students will come up at random times and grab a kindness card and go say whatever is on the card to someone else in the class.  It has so far been a good way to get students thinking and talking in a kind manner.

Cross Country is travelling to Bethel to participate in the meet! We wish them all well as they compete!

Last Saturday we hosted the performance of ALAXSXA | ALASKA. It was an emotional and healing evening for us all! Their performance was followed by Community Yuraq. The energy and enthusiasm we showed as a community was enjoyed and appreciated by our New York visitors! They bought out all the Akula Elitnaurvik T-Shirts as souvenirs.

Our attendance for the week 9/15 is as follows:

Student attendance = 91%

Staff attendance = 98%

Word of the Week:

The word of the week is Kindness (Pinqegcineq). Our Second Grade class led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance and shared the word of the week in the Language of the Day each day!

We are practicing kindness in Akula as we learn to treat others with kindness.
